Certification Scope & Interpretation

Certification confirms that equipment complies with defined technical requirements within a documented scope, configuration, and set of operating conditions.

This page defines how certification scope is interpreted and clarifies the limits of responsibility associated with certified hazardous area equipment.

What Certification Confirms

  • Compliance with applicable standards and protection concepts
  • Testing and evaluation of documented product configurations
  • Defined operating limits and environmental conditions
  • Marking and documentation corresponding to approved scope

What Certification Does Not Confirm

  • Suitability for a specific site or installation
  • Compliance of accessories or modifications not documented
  • Correct installation, wiring, or maintenance practices
  • Approval by local Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ)

Role of Installation and Configuration

Certification applies only when equipment is installed and configured in accordance with documented conditions.

Installation practices, accessories, mounting methods, and environmental conditions may affect compliance and are outside the scope of certification.

Interpretation Boundaries

  • Certification scope is defined by official documentation
  • Interpretation must consider configuration, environment, and use
  • Assumptions beyond documented scope are not valid
  • Responsibility boundaries must remain clearly defined

Relationship to Market Access and Local Approval

Certification does not guarantee market access or local approval.

Acceptance for use remains subject to national regulations, local codes, and AHJ decisions.

Governance & Responsibility

Certification scope interpretation, documentation governance, and update responsibility are maintained under the ExPC Technical Authority.
