IECEx Certification for Explosion-Proof Cameras

IECEx is an international certification system designed to facilitate global acceptance of equipment intended for use in explosive atmospheres.

This page defines how IECEx certification applies to explosion-proof camera systems, including hazardous area classification, protection concepts, temperature classes, and documented limitations.

What IECEx Certification Covers

IECEx certification confirms conformity with applicable IEC standards governing explosion protection, testing, and quality assurance.

Certification applies only to documented equipment configurations, operating conditions, and protection concepts as defined in the official certification documents.

IECEx and the IEC 60079 Standards

  • IECEx certification is based on the IEC 60079 series of standards
  • Standards define protection concepts, testing methods, and marking requirements
  • Certification scope is limited to documented configurations and conditions

Hazardous Area Classification (IECEx)

ZoneDescription
Zone 0Explosive atmosphere present continuously or for long periods
Zone 1Explosive atmosphere likely during normal operation
Zone 2Explosive atmosphere unlikely and present only briefly

Gas and Dust Groups

  • Gas groups classify ignition characteristics of flammable gases and vapors
  • Dust groups apply to combustible dust environments
  • Applicable groups are specified in the IECEx certification documentation

Temperature Classes (T1–T6)

Temperature classes define the maximum permitted surface temperature of equipment to prevent ignition.

The applicable temperature class depends on operating conditions and is explicitly stated in the IECEx certificate.

International Acceptance and Use

IECEx certification is intended to support international acceptance of Ex equipment.

National or regional authorities may impose additional requirements related to market access, labeling, or registration.

Typical Limitations

  • Certification applies only to approved configurations
  • Installation methods and accessories may affect compliance
  • Environmental conditions outside documented limits are not covered
  • Final installation acceptance remains subject to local authority review

Relationship to Other Certification Schemes

IECEx and ATEX share similar protection concepts but operate under different regulatory frameworks.

Regional certification systems may reference IECEx test data while applying local regulatory requirements.

Governance & Interpretation

Interpretation of IECEx certification scope, documentation validity, and responsibility boundaries is maintained under the ExPC Technical Authority.
